Plum Upside Down Process

Plum Upside Down is the fifth book in Valerie Comer’s Farm Fresh Romance series. Here’s a peek at how I created this custom illustrated cover.

When Valerie told me a bit about the characters and the setting, I knew that I had the perfect photo to use as a reference. I’m also a photographer, and this is a shot of a couple of my friends from their engagement session (fun fact, they were also the models for Wild Mint Tea)

Here’s my initial sketch, I showed it to Valerie and she liked it but said that Chelsea’s hair was a bit long, so I adjusted that as I went forward.

I generally have a very straightfoward process, sketch, lines, flat colour, details. This time my process was a bit more back and forth, as you can see by the animation above.

Here’s the final front cover (and some details), I delivered it as soon as it was completed so Valerie could get it up for preorders.

When I received the back cover copy and the page count, I finished up the cover wrap and delivered it as a PDF ready for uploading to CreateSpace. People often wonder if I read the book before I make the cover. I haven’t read this book yet (although I’m starting it this week) because it was still being written while I designed the cover. Indie publishing moves fast!

I love this cover, it makes me long for crisp autumn days to return.
