Amazing Indie Book Cover Designers

Posted on May 13, 2015

In my indie publishing travels, I’ve come across some really excellent cover designers. Rather than continuing to horde the links in my bookmarks, I’d like to share them with you guys. Why would I use my site to help out the competition? Well to start with, I only do sweet and girly book covers. If you are looking for a cover for your gothic horror or zombie novel, I won’t be able to help you (seriously, I can’t even read the stuff. Total wuss!)

Secondly, I don’t really believe in competition. Indie publishing is exploding and there is plenty of work to go around. It’s growing into a healthy industry, and that’s good for all of us. A rising tide lifts all boats, after all.

So, if you want an amazing cover for your book, and my art isn’t a good fit, check out some of the talented designers listed below. And feel free to leave a comment (here or on facebook) with your favourite designer and I’ll check them out. I’m planning on keeping this list updated as I discover new designers to love :)

(the designers are listed in alphabetical order, not any sort of preference)

Book Cover Bakery

Just in case you found this list on google :) I’m Hanna Sandvig and I make covers featuring custom illustrations, photography, and hand lettering. I specialize in light romance, chick lit, and cozy mysteries.

BookFly Design

Nearly every time I see an indie book cover that I’m drawn to, it turns out to be done by James T. Egan from Bookfly Design. He is incredibly prolific, and it’s all really great stuff. I’m a big fan of his fantasy and pulpy noir style covers.

Damon Freeman of Damonza has a large variety of genres in his portfolio but I was most drawn to his excellent urban fantasy work.

E-Book Launch

The guys at e-book launch (I’m not sure who does the covers and who does the formatting) have some nice work, both with photo covers and illustrated.

Kit Foster

Kit Foster does covers for a few genres including nonfiction, but I think he excels at covers featuring interesting typography.

Little Book Designer

Danielle Hurps of Little Book Designer does a great job of dreamy, romantic book covers. She has an eye for picking the right photo and fonts to make deceptively simple but gorgeous cover art.

Mae | Design and Photography

Regina Wamba of Mae Design and Photography is the only other cover designer I know of who is doing custom photo shoots for her covers. If you are looking for something with a gothic fantasy feel, or romance with some heat, I think she’s a great choice.

M. S. Corley

M.S. Corley works for some of the big publishers, but his portfolio includes some indie work as well.  His illustrated covers are fantastic, and I especially like his work for YA books.

Carlos Quevedo’s stuff is incredible. Bookfly was my previous favorite but since I’m writing dark fantasy, Carlos’s covers appeal to me. Amazing work.

I picked up The Witching Elm simply based on the cover…but I’m obviously biased towards a good cover design!

I’ve heard great things about Damonza and BookFly design, and have read about some others on your list as well (Kit Foster, EBook Launch, etc). My book is nonfiction, investing/finance in particular… any recommendations for who excels at that type of cover?

I love how you arranged this list–I’m starting to query cover artists for my science fantasy novel and it’s sometimes very difficult to tell who would be strong in your genre.

Love your mindset, too–really, there doesn’t have to be competition in indie publishing! Tons of readers out there who all want new stuff!
